Srinagar, Apr 5: The Jammu and Kashmir government has said that no fresh posts are currently proposed to be created in Information Department, asserting that the existing sanctioned strength is sufficient to meet its functional requirements.

The reply was given by the Minister Incharge Information Department in response to queries raised by Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi in the Legislative Assembly regarding the creation of dedicated media and communication posts, skill-based engagements, or fellowships for qualified media graduates.

The minister informed the house that the department already has adequate sanctioned posts across relevant media and communication disciplines and, therefore, does not propose to create additional positions at present.

Providing details, the minister said the sanctioned gazetted staff strength in the Information Department related to mass media stands at 47 posts. These include six posts of Assistant Director Information, 21 Information Officers, four Editors, two each of Cultural Officer, Information Officer, Field Publicity Officer among others.

The government further stated that recruitment to these posts is carried out through a transparent process. Gazetted vacancies are filled through the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC), while non-gazetted posts are filled through the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB).

On the issue of unemployment among media and mass communication graduates, the minister said that no discipline-wise data is maintained by either the Information Department or the Labour and Employment Department.

However, the government highlighted that colleges across Jammu and Kashmir offer the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in Mass Communication, which includes mandatory internships aimed at providing practical exposure and enhancing employability.

The minister added that the Information Department remains open to offering internship opportunities to mass communication students as per requirement.
